Digital Painting Session 6

In this session, Simon wanted us to play with proportions.
To do this he had us create structures with 3 basic shapes
We started with a square, a triangle and a circle.
We then had to draw 5 variants of each.
From here, we had to add extensions to the shapes, thinking about proper proportions.
Once we had done that, we added extra details, like doors and windows
And lastly, we added colour.

Digital Painting Session 5

In this session Simon wanted to prepare us for the 'What If? Metropolis' project.
To do this he had us research the artist: RenĂ© Lalique.
While we did this, Simon also explained the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
He also wanted us to pick a particular type of architecture for us to base a city off of.
I decided to use New York.

We were then asked to collect examples of our chosen architecture and of Lalique's work.
With the images we collected, we then went over them with the polygon lasso and filled them in with different shades of grey to create shapes.

With these shapes I then created some mock thumbnails in preparation for the next project.
The designs on the left are the thumbnails and the stuff on the right were the shapes I used to create them.

Digital Painting Session 4

For this session of Digital Painting, Simon wanted us to draw lines and shapes that draw the viewers attention.
To do this we selected a thumbnail from our chosen cities and draw over it. Unfortunately, all of my scanned thumbnails are at home, so I had to use a really low quality screenshot from my greenlight review.

So next I added some lines are basic colour. Not going to lie, I didn't really know what I was doing. It wasn't that I was distracted, I just wasn't with it properly.

After we all started working, Simon started walking around the room. Eventually he made his way to me. Honestly, he was very helpful.
I had a general idea of what I wanted to do, but I could quite visualise it fully, so he helped me with that by drawing some very rough sketches.

These two simple sketches have really shown me to think more about spacing, size and perspective.
I then completely redrew the thumbnail with what Simon had shown me in mind

It's still not perfect, but I now have much more of an idea of what I'm going to do with the city of Diomira.

Digital Painting Session 3

For this session Simon showed us how to import and use new brushes. He also showed us how to create our own.

Most of this page was just me playing around various brushes and the polygonal lasso tool. The nature setting at the top was created using only brushes that Simon had given us to experiment with. The domes in the picture below were created with a brush I made myself.
Simon also showed us how to use the custom shape tool. Unfortunately, he never showed up how to make our own shapes. Hopefully he might cover this in a later session, or I'll figure it out myself later.

He also covered perspective with us. I generally already know about the different points of perspective, but it was nice having someone cover it in more depth.

Digital Painting Session 2

For our second session on digital painting, Simon had us use Photoshop's polygonal lasso tool to recreate preexisting art with only 3 shades.

Firstly we selected one or two scenes from any film we wanted. I chose Spider-Man: Homecoming. Then we tried to recreate the scenes by creating abstract shapes that were black, white or 50% grey.

Here's what I created. Not going to lie, I found it difficult to replicate the scene without outright tracing. Looking at it now, I can see where I could have added extra shading.
I could have added some black where the van door is open, I could have made the sky and the window white. But we moved onto the second task of the day, before I noticed that.

We had to do the same again, but this time with another piece of art created by a famous artist. (I cannot remember who I chose, so I'll add the name here when I find out later)

Firstly, I went through and cut out all the different shades with the polygonal lasso tool. I did go back and add some detail with the brush, mostly because I was getting annoyed with the lasso. After, we was told to add some colour. Marble I white, I honestly didn't really know what to do, other than add some shades of cream and blue. I wanted to make the colours blend in a bit more, but I have no idea how to do that, so I guess I need to do some more experimenting on Photoshop.

Digital Painting Session 1

As practice for digital painting, Simon had us plan out Octavia. We created an influence map and some thumbnails.

As you can see my influence map isn't exactly great, nor was it actually finished. Since this was more practice than anything else, the ones I am actually creating for the project contain much more.

These thumbnails were the first thing I've ever actually drawn in photoshop. As you can see I forgot to number them and they are all very rough. Most of the thumbnails I'm drawing for the full project are drawn in pencil, but I might do a few on photoshop as well, just so I can get used to the program.

Major - Reflective Statement

I won't lie, if I really wanted to I could make this reflective statement just be a list of every little detail that went wrong from pre...
