Minor - Reflective Statement

Looking solely at the project, without paying attention to any outside factors, I can say that I'm not too disappointed with my work in Minor. I have created five fully modeled characters and have rewritten my script to be shorter and, in my honest opinion, funnier. Granted I didn't manage to get onto rigging as soon as I would have liked, but my reasons for this a to do with elements unrelated to the project specifically.

Speaking of which, I feel like the elephant in everyone's rooms, namely the COVID pandemic and the lockdowns, has negatively impacted everyone, not just myself. I don't want to use the lockdown as an excuse for lack of work, but I cannot ignore how it has hindered both my work ethic and my mental health considerably. It was common knowledge that I was on campus nearly daily and this allowed me time away from my issues and distractions at home, obviously due to lockdown restrictions, I can no longer do this. I am by no means blaming anyone for this, I understand the severity of the situation and I know why we cannot go back to campus, it's just frustrating for me as working from home is incredibly difficult.

Before lockdown I would work on campus and my bedroom was a place for me to recharge, for lack of a better word. However due to obvious circumstances, my place of rest has now become the same place I have to do my work, and I am struggling because of it. I no longer have a place to relax, not that I even have the time to either, and I'm becoming burnt out quicker. I struggled through Minor due to at times not feeling motivated to do anything, this is a dangerous mindset that I have been in before, and I can tell you I don't like it.

My Minor project has suffered because I am suffering, I'm not as far as I would have liked to have been because I feel emotionally exhausted. I can't help but let the chaos of the outside world get to me, but this is the time we live in. I'm struggling to cope with the idea that normalcy is gone and I am struggling to adapt to the idea that I just don't get a break anymore, because there is no longer a difference between the workplace and my living quarters. I am trying desperately not to fall back into the pit of depression, but that is easier said than done.

Despite this I am proud of the things I have achieved in this project. From my understanding modelling just one character can be a daunting task, yet here I am with five completed models. Granted they are not rigged or UV'd, but this is work I can continue in due time, for the moment I am proud in myself for being able to create characters from scratch and have them come out looking as I had imagined.

The other part of my work this project has been to my story. While I'm not super fond of my animatic, I am proud of my script. The main complaints from my original story was that it was too long and that it didn't flow well enough. This newest version is almost 2 minutes shorter than the 6 minute original and, in my opinion, it is much funnier. I have run this version of the script through a few people, to which I have received positive feedback. This greatly improved my confidence in myself and the project.

In conclusion, I feel like the current events of the world have severely, negatively impacted my work, however the work I have produced I am pleased with and am happy to move onto Major with.

Minor - Modelling Update (3D Production OGR pt.1)

Behold! Klepto-Man's model is pretty much done, except for his cape. The eyes are still temporary until I begin working on the 2D facial rig.

Minor - Klepto-Man Script V6

Here's a brand new script. I overhauled almost the entire script and now it's an entire 2 pages shorter. Hopefully this means it'll be about 2 minutes shorter as well.

Minor - Updated Character Designs

I finally got around to updating each of my characters. I wanted to get these all done before I get to work on my animatic.

I'm reasonably pleased with how these came out. I think I can now get to work on making orthographs.

Minor - Epic Man Redesign (Klepto-Man & Script V5)

So I wasn't super fond of the original name "Epic Man" and have been looking to replace it all summer, I believe I finally got a final name for the character.

Since the final joke in the script portrays the hero as a kleptomaniac, I wanted to play with this for the name as a way of setting up the joke. I've been trying to decide if I prefered "Captain Klepto" or "Klepto-Man". I've currently settled on Klepto-Man as it flows a little better in the script.

Here's some quick sketch work on the redesign. If you remember back to my Epic Man design, you'll notice it's not very different, that's because the classic superhero look is still what I'm going for, I just wanted the design to fit more with someone called Klepto-Man.

All that's really changed is I've added a bandana to cover his face. I'm unsure whether it should replace his hair or not. I also haven't decided if his eyes will have pupils or not.

I still don't know what to do with the symbol on his chest, or if he should even have a symbol.

The main difference in this design will be colour. Epic Man was yellow and orange, warm, friendly colours, whereas with Klepto-Man I want to use light blue and teal, colder, but still quite friendly.

Other than redesigning the character, I've also been working on the script. Moving from script v4a, I've written 5a and 5b.

5a is the exact same as 4a, but "Epic Man" has been replaced with "Klepto-Man".

5b changes some of the dialogue from the narrator in the opening. This is based on my meeting with Tom, where we joked about the city seeing Klepto-Man more as an annoyance than a superhero. I quite like this idea, but I would much like to hear other opinions on this.

If you read these two scripts, please tell me which one you prefer and if there's anything you think needs changing. I'd like any feedback as I would honestly like for version 6 of my script to be my final.

Minor - Scripts V4a, 4b & 4c

So for my fourth draft of the script, I have three versions.

4a is the same story from V3, just with a few amendments.

4b is the same but with one of the henchmen removed. I did this to see if the story still worked with less characters. In my opinion it still works, but I don't think it's as funny as it is with all three henchmen.

4c is a small experiment with starting in medias res, with the story then going back to the start in scene 2. I'm not too sure about it and would like some other opinions.

As of uploading this, I've already started V5, which is working from 4a. However this can easily be amended if people think b or c are better. If anyone has anything they'd like to suggest, please let me know.

Minor - Updates (Script V3 & Some new ideas)

After my Jetpack Jones submission I took quite a long break for numerous reasons, but alas here we are back again and it's time to kick the 3rd year into gear.

A few things.

1. I was planning on getting my animatic completely finished before coming back, but I was unable to due to mental health complications. Not that it matters now anyway, the script is being updated.

2. Speaking of the script, Tom requested that I give him an updated script so he could have a better understanding of my idea. I have now done this. I've only update a couple lines here and there, but I have completely overhauled the ending. I'm hoping this version will be funnier.

3. I need to change the name of the title character. "Epic Man" is really only a placeholder until I can think of something much better. I was thinking of something like "Captain Klepto", which plays into the joke of the ending, but I'm unsure of it.

4. I have also been thinking of removing one of the henchmen, which would mostly be helpful in saving time when character modelling/rigging. But I am aware this would require a bit of story rewrite to effectively combine the roles of two of the henchmen.

5. And lastly, for the character designs in 3D I had an idea about how to do the eyes, eyebrows and mouths of the characters. I'm wondering if it's possible to animatable planes that I can move around the heads. I think if I can pull of this idea correctly, it would lend itself excellently to the heavily stylised and cartoon art style.

If I haven't explained an idea very well here or there is something wrong with the script, please do let me know.
